Preventive Nutrition = Longevity
Today there is a glaring contradiction in the statistics about the extended lifespan of the average American. Although now we live almost thirty years longer than people did 100 years ago – rather than being a “Golden Age” free of illness and frailty, a large percentage of our seniors are plagued by obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer. There are two important take-a-ways in these statistics; first, it’s likely most victims of these diseases had a genetic predisposition to the illness that befell them; and second, had those vulnerabilities been identified early enough, the diseases might have been prevented.
For example, Beth (age 27) reported on our “Family Tree” questionnaire that several females in her family had high cholesterol readings, When we examined copies of her female relatives tests, all had low levels of protective HDL cholesterol, and several older females had had heart attacks. This was an unmistakable red flag. Beth inherited a predisposition that, had it not been identified, would have caused trouble. We implemented a menu that both raised her HDL level and lowered the level of LDL, the bad cholesterol. This established a ratio that made it unlikely to result in blocked arteries as Beth ages.
At Lifeways, we believe an ounce of prevention is smarter than waiting till a pound of drugs is called for. It’s easier to avoid diseases than to get rid of them. That’s why we developed a questionnaire to use as a diagnostic tool in our program of Preventive Nutrition Therapy. It’s a chart that examines the diseases that have previously occurred among your parents, grandparents, and all your extended blood relatives.
This allows us to identify the health risks a person is predisposed to have inherited from their family’s genetic makeup. We then compare it with indicators found in copies of your medical records and blood tests. This allows us to identify any vulnerability you may have to a specific condition.
Based on our findings, we develop a Preventive Nutrition diet plan designed to protect you from the condition we identify. The foundation for this plan is Lifeways compiled formulary of foods as well as supplements, probiotics, phytochemicals, and nutraceuticals that target specific conditions. Evidence-based research has shown these have a prophylactic effect in preventing the most common and widespread diseases. To repeat, addressing what might possibly be a vulnerability is wiser than waiting till a medical intervention is inescapable.
